How to clean leafy greens?

To ensure that your leafy greens are thoroughly cleaned please follow these steps:

  • Remove any damaged or discolored leaves: Take off any leaves that are wilted, slimy or discoloured.
  • Give the greens a good rinsing: First, give the greens a good rinsing under some cool running water.
  • Soak the greens: If the greens are extremely dirty or sandy fill a big bowl or sink with cool water and soak the greens for several minutes. This will allow any dirt or sand to settle to the bottom of the bowl or sink. If the greens are not particularly dirty or sandy skip this step.
  • Dry the Greens: You can use a salad spinner, paper towels or clean dish towels to fully dry the greens or you can pat them dry with clean dish towels.
  • Ensure that they are properly stored: After the greens have been washed and dried, place them in a plastic bag along with a paper towel which will help absorb any additional moisture.

It is essential to be aware that some leafy greens such as arugula, spinach and lettuce can be pre-wash and package hence it is essential to check the packaging for the appropriate directions on how to clean the produce.

When cleaning leafy greens you should also try to avoid using soap or detergent because these products might leave behind a residue that is potentially hazardous to your health if swallowed.
